During training, I've been placed into a role of leadership over the 50 members of my squad, and then over my smaller 7 team members as well. I'm going to serve as a logistics coordinator for the duration of the race. This means that there is a variety of tasks that fall to me. On a whole squad level, I am a catch all for other positions and any miscellaneous responsibilities. I'm in charge of any time we cross a border; so transportation, as well as visas for each member of the squad, passports being stamped, and all the other nuances of crossing borders. Additionally, after each country, our whole squad will take a few days to debrief, discuss what we saw and learned in each country, and get the opportunity to really check in with one another to make sure everyone is doing okay. I'm responsible for all the planning, lodging, transportation and purchasing of supplies we may need. I also make sure there is clean water and plan foods for us to eat. These responsibilities are super fun and I'm extremely grateful, however they do require an abundance of planning and preparation as I will have to continuously accommodate 50+ members as we may have additional mentors come these debriefs as well.
There is also a team level. So out of the 50 racers, we're divided into teams of 7 or 8 racers to live with while on the race. For these 7 girls, I am the treasurer meaning I handle all of our financial needs. I will be paying for lodging, transportation, food, clean water, and any emergency situations we may run into. I have to keep a record of all of these transactions, so I keep a note book log, a physical receipt, an online account and uploading all of our physical receipts to our bank. I'm finding that I will most likely be spending a lot of time in a coffee shop doing paperwork but regardless I'm very grateful for these leadership opportunities!!
